KMC faces recurring issues for garbage management

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Office has met with problems for garbage disposal in the rainy season.

Generally, waste is produced more than of usual time in rainy days and undesirable conditions of roadways during this season is another challenge for transporting collected waste to the disposal site.

Besides, the KMC is facing another issue for the waste management.

The Sisdole-based landfill site in Kakani Rural Municipality of Nuwakot has already been packed and waste picked up from 18 local levels of the Kathmandu Valley is being dumped in an area beneath there.

As said by KMC Environment Department Chief Hari Kumar Shrestha, the problem was there during rainy season in previous years too. But this time, it becomes more intense as it has faced lack of space to dispose the waste.

Sisdole has been used as the place for the management of waste collected from 18 local levels of the Kathmandu Valley since the past 13 years against the contract for two years.

Though 1,700 ropani of land two kilometers away from Sisdole has been acquired to prepare a new disposal area, the physical works are yet to kick.

It is estimated that it will cost at least around Rs three billion and two years to make the infrastructure ready for the disposal.

From the Valley, 1,200 metric tons of waste is managed at Sisdole on a daily basis and maximum 500 metric tons is contributed by the Kathmandu Metropolis alone.

Two hundred KMC and private vehicles are used to transport waste to Sisdole which is not sole waste management site for the Valley. Waste from Kakani Rural Municipality and Dhunibesi in Dhading is taken there for the disposal.
