Task force proposes granting two-day weekend



KATHMANDU: A task force formed by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has submitted its report proposing to grant leave to the employees twice a week ‘to promote domestic tourism’.

A meeting of a high-level group Chaired by Minister Yogesh Bhattarai at the Ministry had formed a task force to study to that end.

A committee was formed under the coordination of Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Chief of Tourism Division Pradip Kumar Koirala, Chief of Tourism Department Rudra Singh Tamang, and Chief Executive Officer of Nepal Tourism Board Dhananjay Regmi.

The committee also included representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of General Administration.

The committee has submitted a report stating that two days weekend is practiced in 88 percent of the countries of the world and one-day weekend in 12 percent of countries, suggesting that the system of a two-day weekend can be adopted.

The committee has concluded that giving two-day leave in a week will reduce the administrative expenses.

The two-day weekend will increase the productivity of employees, offices, and organizations, help reduce government spending, promote domestic tourism from a tourism point of view, maintain gender equality in social terms, balance work and personal life, and maintain family closeness.

The committee has concluded that it can have a positive impact on the environmental point of view.
