SIRAHA: As many as 59 inmates in Siraha district prison have tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Babita Mahato, the acting head of the prison, all the inmates infected with COVID-19 are male.

A few days ago, seven detainees brought for trial were found to have corona infection.

“We kept seven new detainees in separate places. However, they tested positive for coronavirus after they have been suffered with fever,” said Mahato, adding, “After testing positive for them, we tested others as well.”

Mahato said that every year in the month of August, viral fever appears in the inmates and this time, too, the test was done on the suspicion of coronavirus.

Siraha prison has the capacity to hold 150 inmates. However, there are currently 596 inmates in the jail. Of them, 18 are women and two are dependent children, said Mahato.

There is also a lack of space to keep the infected in separate places as there are more inmates than the capacity of the prison.

She said that swabs of all the inmates and staff of the prison would be collected on Thursday and Friday.
