KATHMANDU: With the surge in coronavirus infection cases impacting the distribution of active membership, the main opposition Nepali Congress is unlikely to hold its 14th General Convention in February in 2021.

The NC leaders are divided over whether to immediately postpone the schedule or few weeks later.

President Sher Bahadur Deuba seems reluctant to postpone the date of the general convention himself for the fear of drawing flak from the Paudel faction.

Hence, the establishment faction is unwilling to put forth the proposal regarding the postponement of the date unless the Paudel group agrees to it.

Even though Paudel faction has also realized that holding the general convention in February in 2021 is impossible, they are ready to float the proposal to postpone it.

They have fear that if the date for the convention is postponed, the establishment may not hold it for a long time.

The 14th General Convention of the NC must be held every four years as per the party’s statute.

Six months of one year term extended based on the provision of ‘special circumstances’ has also elapsed by.

NC has scheduled its 14th general convention for February 19-22, 2021.

If the NC fails to hold the convention on the stipulated date, it can be extended by six months and held by mid-September 2021 as per the party statute.

Former General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula has said that it is impossible to hold the 14 the General Convention in February.

Taking part in the virtual meeting held to mark the 107th BP Jayanti on Wednesday, Sitaula urged the establishment to call a central committee meeting to discuss the date of the general convention.
