Janata Samajwadi Party registered with EC

KATHMANDU: The Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) has been registered with the Election Commission (EC) today.

The JSP, formed after the unification of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJP) and Socialist Party Nepal (SPN), has been formally registered at the EC, according to EC Spokesperson Raj Kumar Shrestha.

It should be recalled that RJP and SPN had unified late night on April 22 to avert split in the SPN that was abetted by Prime Minister KP Oli.

A meeting of the cabinet had on April 20 brought an ordinance that allowed a party split with the support of 40 percent in either the party’s central committee of the parliamentary party.

The new JSP will be using SPN’s flag and RJP’s election symbol, umbrella. With the formal registration, the party will have 34 members in the House of Representatives – both with 17 seats each.

Meanwhile, SPN lawmaker Sarita Giri, who was recently ousted both from the parliament and the party has lodged an application at the EC against the party’s decision to oust her.

The SPN had earlier this week expelled her from the HoR and party for not abiding by the party whip on the Constitution amendment bill brought to implement the revised map of the country.
