Iran response ‘too fast and too furious’

KATHMANDU: Iran’s retaliation against the US killing of Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian top commander has come ‘too fast and too furious,’ an expert on Middle East security affairs warned.

Alex Vatanka, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, said ‘there’s now a “real danger” and that the situation could get out of hand.

He said Iran’s retaliation was not unexpected, but it came ‘so fast and so furious’.

Iran on early Wednesday morning fired over a dozen ballistic missiles against some Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq, according to a statement by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The attack came less than a week after a U.S. airstrike killed Soleimani, who led the Iranian Quds Force.

President Donald Trump meanwhile tweeted that “All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq”

“So far, so good! We have the most powerful and well-equipped military anywhere in the world, by far! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Chief of Defense Staff General Jonathan Vance confirmed its deployed personnel are safe.
