Parliamentary Committee directs govt to arrange for taxi transport



KATHMANDU: The meeting of Development and Technical Committee(DTC) of the parliament on Wednesday directed the government to arrange for the operation of taxi service in the Kathmandu Valley.

According to the DTC sources, after discussion with the representatives of the transport entrepreneurs, the committee directed the government to arrange for the operation of the taxi service discontinued due to lockdown.

“As the government has made the policy to further revive the economy and provide service to the public through the operation of various services provided they meet the standards set by World Health Organization, Ministry of Health and Population and COVID-19 Crisis Management Committee, the committee directs the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transportation to arrange for the operation of Taxi service,” the DTC minute reads.

After the lockdown, the government enforced since March 24, the livelihood of the people who made their living on daily wage and the self-employed people, entrepreneurs and the manpower engaged in private sector are hit badly financially.

Keeping in mind the people are facing due to lockdown and also to revive the economy that reached at the verge of collapse due to the standstill of all economic activities, the government decided to relax the lockdown.

As a result, private vehicles are in operation in odd-even system but public means of transportation are still subject to lockdown.

Transportation entrepreneurs have been putting pressure on government citing that their fellow beings are depressed and even started committing suicide.

Such workers and entrepreneurs complain that their source of income is gone and their vehicles are also out of order making the installment payment further difficult.
