Additional 100,000 to be roped in social security scheme

KATHMANDU:  At a time when the participation of employers and workers to the contribution-based social security plan has seen a very disappointing trend, the government is set to focus on promotional measures to increase enrollment in the plan.

Unveiling a three-month-long action plan today, Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security Rameswor Raya Yadav pledged to rope in 15,000 employers and additional 100,000 contributors to the plan.

It may be noted that the government had launched the plan on 21 November 2019 to rope in all workers to the domain of social security.

Though a year has elapsed since the announcement of the plan, only 135,793 workers and 11,980 employers became part of the plan.

According to preliminary results of the first National Economic Survey undertaken by the Central Bureau of Statistics, there are 922,445 business units in Nepal. As many as 3,408,746 employees are actively engaged in the units.
