Nepal govt announcing revised height of Mt Everest on Tuesday

KATHMANDU: The Nepal government is announcing the revised height of Mt Everest on Tuesday.

The newly-measured height of the world’s tallest peak is being unveiled amidst a program to be organized at the office of the Survey Department, Minbhawan tomorrow.

Sushil Narsing Raj Bhandari, deputy director General at the Survey Department of the Nepal government, said the program will start at 1 pm for which an invitation has been sent to all media outlets and representatives.

“We will be hosting a program to announce the new height on Tuesday afternoon at our office. People who actively took part in this procedure will also be felicitated on the occasion,” said Rajbhandari.

This is the first time the Nepal government undertook the initiation to measure the height of Sagarmatha, the Nepali name for the famed world’s highest peak, at its own expenses. A joint team from Nepal and China had undertaken the task.

Measured in 1954 by Survey of India, 8,848 meters is the widely accepted and recognized height of Mt Everest.
