SC shrinks its service citing increase in COVID-19 cases

Only most essentials services to continue

KATHMANDU: Citing the spike in the coronavirus cases in Kathmandu Valley and around, the Supreme Court (SC) has decided to suspend most of its services but for those held most essentials and continued during first few weeks of lockdown.

According to joint spokesperson of Supreme Court, Devendra Dhakal, the SC that has resumed its office and all services as before after the formal lifting up of lockdown on July 21, 2020, has decided to curtail its service to during lockdown status citing the increasing number of coronavirus cases in the Valley and around.

Dhakal said that SC will continue the services regarded as most essential and related to Habeas Corpus, writ petitions, reviews, interim order, etc. that are often continued during the emergencies.

SC has regarded it not much rational to continue the regular operation when the COVID-19 cases are spiking in the valley and throughout the country and when one of its staff has been infected by COVID-19.

However, SC has assured that the services deemed to resume from August 17 will go unaffected by the latest decision.

On July 23, SC had directed the district courts to provide or set time required to stall the legal deadlines citing the lockdown.

However, SC itself had planned to set or fix the deadlines or time constraints after the restoration of country-wide normalcy both in transportation and other movements.
