NCP Secretariat to discuss MCC

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has decided to convene a meeting of its Secretariat to discuss the widely-talked-about Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The decision to this effect was made following a one-on-one meeting held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar between Prime Minister KP Oli and NCP Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on Sunday afternoon.

According to a party source, the Secretariat meeting will be called in a day or two, most probably on Monday afternoon.

It should be recalled that the NCP has entrusted the Parliament to decide the fate of MCC.

The ruling party is divided on the issue. While Dahal, senior leaders Jhalanath Khanal, Madhav Kumar Nepal, party leader Bhim Rawal and others are against the endorsement of the MCC, PM Oli, Defense Minister Ishwor Pokhrel, Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali and others are in favor of endorsing it.

The NCP has also formed a task force led by senior leader Khanal and including Foreign Minister Gyawali and standing committee member Rawal as members on February 2 to study MCC.

The task force later said it should not be endorsed without amendment.

The Nepali Congress, too, wants MCC to be endorsed immediately from the Parliament.

It should also be recalled that the US Embassy in Nepal has already clarified the issue saying that the MCC is not part of any military affairs.
