NC demands government to withdraw hike in tariff on electric vehicles



KATHMANDU: In a symbolic gesture, the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) on Sunday reminded the ruling Nepal Communist Party its election manifesto while urging the government to withdraw the hike in tariffs on electric vehicles.

NC lawmaker Devendra Raj Kandel asked the government to withdraw the hike of around 113 percent in electric vehicles immediately.

Speaking at today’s session of the House of Representatives (HoR), NC lawmaker Kandel said that the government’s decision to hike the tariff on electric vehicles will raise in the import of fuels.

It should be noted that the Minister of Finance Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada had hiked the tariffs on electric vehicles in the recently unveiled 2020/21 budget.

As a reminder, lawmaker Kandel read out the election manifesto of the ruling party which said that the government would operate electric vehicles in the Kathmandu Valley within three years.

According to him, the country imported fuels worth Rs 215 billion in the past two years.

Likewise, NC lawmaker Gagan Thapa also lambasted the government for hiking the tariff on electric vehicles.

Thapa, too, reminded the NCP government of its election manifesto asking, “Don’t you think that this decision is against your manifesto?”
