KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has walked out of the Secretariat meeting of the ruling Nepal Communist Party amidst growing conflict among various intra-party pacts.

The meeting of the Secretariat of the ruling party held on Wednesday which started with the self-criticism of the PM Oli seem still unable to quench the growing conflict in the party.

According to the sources, PM Oli who was not much prepared for the self-criticism got annoyed when, one after another, the members went on criticizing the ‘controversial decisions’ of the government.

The annoyed PM, who is also one of the Chairmen of the ruling NCP left the meeting that was talking about the agenda for the Standing Committee meeting to be held soon.

According to the sources, even after the ‘walk out’ of PM Oli, the meeting of the party Secretariat continued.

Party insiders said PM Oli walked out after he had some heated arguments with NCP Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on some issues when the meeting was underway.

Sources claimed that PM Oli refused to acknowledge the self-criticism he made on Saturday that has been documented in the proposal meant for Thursday, which has now become uncertain.

It was reported that the PM had agreed undergo self-criticizm for all the weakness of the government and not to interfere in the executive Chairman Prachanda’s role.

PM had even promised to seek consent from party Secretariat prior to making any important decisions.

Of late, the dissatisfied section of the ruling party even engineered the ousting of PM Oli after the latter brought two ordinances two weeks ago, something which has been criticized as Oli’s plan at further consolidating his grip in both the party and the government.

The ordinances, which were immediately endorsed by the President, however, were withdrawn following criticism from all quarters, including the ruling party.

Since then, PM Oli had been trying to woo ruling party leaders to secure his majority both in the party Secretariat and the Parliamentary Party.

It has been said that among the 174 lawmakers representing the ruling NCP, PM Oli has around 78 on his side, which is 10 lawmakers short of a majority.

Both the sides – PM Oli and Dahal-Nepal – had even initiated a signature campaign to prove their strength in the party.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Chairman Dahal and senior leader Nepal had decided to demand ‘one person, one post’ during Thursday’s Standing Committee meeting.

A meeting among the disgruntled leaders held in Lalitpur on Tuesday had decided to this regard.

Meanwhile, the Standing Committee meeting, which was scheduled for Thursday at the Dhumbarahi-based party office has become uncertain.

The Standing Committee was scheduled to be convened after several weeks of intra-party disputes, particularly between the Oli and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal-Dahal-led faction of the party.

After weeks of escalated intra-party wrangling, the two factions have finally decided to hold the meeting of the Standing Committee, something which the disgruntled faction has been demanding.

PM Oli was criticized from within the party for centralizing the power with himself.
