Cabinet meeting underway; lockdown likely to be extended

KATHMANDU: A meeting of Council of Ministers is underway at the Prime Minister’s residence Baluwatar. The meeting is likely to extend the nationwide lockdown, sources have said.

A meeting of the High Level Coordination Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control had earlier stated that the lockdown enforced to control and prevent coronavirus needs to be continued.

Despite the committee’s decision to continue the lockdown, the final decision on the number of days will be taken by the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Committee member and Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office Narayan Prasad Bidari said after the meeting held on Tuesday, “It has been decided to continue what the government is doing now. Further decision will be taken by the Cabinet meeting.”

The government had first enforced the lockdown on March 24 for a week after the second coronavirus case was reported in Nepal.

The first lockdown had been extended until March 31, the second one was extended until April 7, the third until April 15, the fourth until April 27, while the fifth one is expiring on May 7.

Nepal has 82 COVID-19 cases so far.
