Sudan scam convict Shambhu Bharati released on bail



KATHMANDU: Shambhu Bharati, who had been serving a jail-term after being convicted in the high-profile Sudan scam, has been released on bail.

Bharati, an agent of the contractor company involved in Sudan embezzlement scam, was released on Sunday as part of implementation of the Supreme Court (SC)’s order.

Hearing the appeal filed by Bharati, on December 14 , a division bench of Justices Tej Bahadur KC, Prakash Dhungana and Manoj Kumar Sharma had issued an order to release Bharati on bail.

On May 30 2016, the SC had convicted Bharati in the multi-billion scam and slapped him with a one-year jail sentence along with a fine of Rs 142 million.

The other convicts in the scam were former Inspectors General of Nepal Police – Om Bikram Rana, Hem Bahadur Gurung and Ramesh Chand Thakuri.
