FinMin Khatiwada likely to be nominated NA member

KATHMANDU: With the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP)’s decision to pick Vice Chairman Bam Dev Gautam as the member of the House of Representatives, Minister for Finance and Information and Communications Technology Yuba Raj Khatiwada is likely to become the member of the National Assembly.

A meeting of the Secretariat held on Saturday had decided to elect Gautam as the member of the House of Representatives ‘in an appropriate time’. In the meeting Gautam himself had stated that he had no interest in becoming the NA member.

Earlier, a Secretariat meeting on February 26 decided to nominate Gautam as the member to the National Assembly.

However, this decision hit a snag after Oli wanted to reappoint Khatiwada by nominating him as the NA member when the tenure of the NA was expiring on March 4.

After the differences in the party on who to be picked as the NA member – Gautam or Khatiwada  – widened, Oli decided to make Khatiwada resign from his post and reappoint him as the finance minister.

According to the Constitution of Nepal, a Nepali citizen can become a minister for six months even if he/she is not a parliamentarian and this position will continue if they become lawmakers during this period.

Minister Khatiwada had taken oath of office for the second time which will remain effective until October 7.

Khatiwada’s chance of becoming NA member is likely since Gautam has stopped claiming the post.
