WASHINGTON: A senior former US military officer denounced President Donald Trump’s threat to mobilize troops to suppress protests in the US.

The ex-Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, Gen Martin Dempsey, dubbed Trump’s remarks as ‘dangerous’ and ‘very troubling’.

Protests have spread across the country since the alleged police murder of George Floyd, a black man.

Demonstrations over Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, Minnesota, appear to be simmering down in Washington.

Gen Dempsey said the idea that President Trump would take charge of the situation using military is troubling.

He served as America’s most senior military officer under Barack Obama, former US President from 2011-15.
