Sugarcane cultivated in 81,000 hectares land
Out of the total fertile land in the country, sugarcane is being cultivated on around 81,000 hectares of land. Though Nepal is in the 33rd position among the countries producing sugarcane in the world, sugarcane farming is not prospering in this situation also. According to the Nepal Agricultural Research Council, National Sugarcane Crop Research Programme, Jitpur, a total of 4.3 million metric tonnes of sugarcane was produced in Nepal in fiscal year 2074/75 BS. Thousands of people and families have got employment directly due to the sugar industry and the marketing of sugar.
Fifth Nepal-Bangladesh commerce meeting
The fifth Nepal-Bangladesh commerce secretary-level meeting is taking place in Dhaka from Tuesday. An eight-member team of representatives led by commerce secretary Baikuntha Aryal left for Dhaka to take part in the meeting. The two-day talks will focus on Nepal-Bangladesh commerce, trade and investment and all aspects of their mutual trade, it has been said. Likewise, preliminary discussions regarding the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement will also take place.
Corona effect: No human mobility in Annapurna trek
The Annapurna Trekking Route has seen very few human mobilities due to fear stemming from the epidemic of coronavirus. The Annapurna circuit trek that starts with counter-clockwise from Lamjung district headquarters, Beshisahar, ends at Pokhara in Kaski. Earlier, there used to be a huge inflow of trekkers during the season. However, the trek now seems to be void. In fact, there is no mobility of tourists trekking to Manang via Lamjung Besisahar, Khudi Bhulbhule, Bahundanda and Jagatchyamche. Tourism and hotel entrepreneurs have been disappointed due to almost-no arrival of trekkers and tourists.
US announces commitment of $37m for countries affected by COVID-19
The U.S. Government has announced a commitment of $37 million in financing from the Emergency Reserve Fund for Contagious Infectious Diseases at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for 25 countries affected by novel coronavirus COVID-19 or at high risk of its spread. The U.S. Government is providing these funds to the World Health Organization, other multilateral institutions, and programs led by USAID’s implementing partners, a statement issued by USAID said. According to USAID Administrator Mark Green, these are the first U.S. Government funds committed from the pledge of up to $100 million announced by the U.S. Department of State on February 7, 2020.
