Nepali Congress picks candidates for NA polls



KATHMANDU: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has finalized its 16 candidates for the National Assembly (NA) elections.

An office-bearers meeting of the party held at President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence on Saturday morning picked the candidates.

According to Spokesperson Bishwo Prakash Sharma, Mina Pumali Magar will contest from Province-1 from women quota, Nir Bahadur BK and Rajendra Ghimire have been picked from Dalit and ‘others’ category respectively.

Similarly, Nagina Yadav from women and Bhola Panjiyar from differently-abled/minority quota have been picked from Province-2. The party will support the Samajwadi Party for Dalit and ‘others’ category.

Woman candidate Chhali Kumar Sharma Upadhyaya and Hari Sharan Shrestha representing the ‘others’ category have been picked from Province-3.

Similarly, Surya Prasad Regmi will contest from Gandaki Province under the ‘others’ category and Bimala Gauchhan from the women’s category.

The party picked Bal Krishna Pandey from ‘others’ category, Girija Neupane from women and Meraj Halwai from differently-abled/ minority category from Province 5.

The party also picked Sabitra Poudel under the women category and Dilliram Pathak for ‘others’ category from Karnali Province.

Likewise, Tulasi Devkota under women’s quota and Pratap Thagunna under the ‘others’ have been picked the party’s candidates for the NA polls from Sudurpaschim Province.

The election for the vacant seats in NA, the upper house of the federal parliament, is slated to be held on January 23.

The term of 19 members or one-third members of the 59-member upper house is terminating from March 3, 2020.

Of this many National Assembly members, 18 would be chosen through election while the remaining one member would be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the government.

This election will elect seven women members, two members from the Dalit communities, two members from the minority communities and seven members from others.

An electoral college comprising the State Assembly members, the chairs and vice-chairs of the Rural Municipality and the mayor and deputy mayor of Municipality will elect the members to the National Assembly.
