Australia’s Auburn: A home to 2,500 Nepali speakers

KATHMANDU: A large number of Nepali speaking people live in Auburn, a suburb which is 22 kilometers west of Sydney.

According to the latest Census result, a little less than 2,500 Nepal people live in this bustling western Sydney suburb, which also houses a few Nepali restaurants and grocery shops.

Earlier, Rockdale, a city south of Sydney, had been regarded as the most popular suburb to live among Nepali speakers in Australia. Now its crown has gone to Auburn.

Hurstville, which is only 5 kilometers south of Rockdale, is the second most popular suburb for Nepali speakers.

With the increasing trend of Nepali students joining Australian universities, the number of Nepali students has gone up in recent years. Mostly the students aged between 25 to 29 years live here in this suburb.

When it comes to gender proportion, 53.8 % of Nepali population are male while rest are represented by female.

Eighty three percent of Nepali speakers are identified as believers of Hinduism followed by Buddhism (9.4%).

While 16.9 % Nepali population earn $800-$900 a week, 15.6% of female earn nil income.

Nepali speaking population in Australia has increased significantly since 2011 Census.

The total population of Nepali speakers counted in the recent Census is 62,002 compared to 27,155 that was recorded in 2011 census.
