Can’t afford another Gulf war: UN Secretary-General

NEW YORK: The United Nations (UN) said the Gulf Countries cannot afford another war in response to the US airstrike that killed Iranian Commander Qassem Soleimani at the international airport in the capital city Baghdad on Friday.

UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed concerns worrying that the violence would escalate further in the Gulf Countries following the US airstrike near the international airport based in Baghdad. “The world cannot afford another Gulf war”, Secretary-General Guterres said in a press release.

“The Secretary-General has consistently advocated for de-escalation in the Gulf war. He is deeply concerned with the recent escalation,” said a press release issued by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Guterres.

Meanwhile Secretary General urged the world leaders to exercise maximum restraint to preempt further escalation of wars in the Gulf countries.

The US confirmed it was behind the airstrike that killed the powerful Iranian commander, a major escalation in a conflict with Iran.

Qassem Soleiman was the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force since 1998, a foreign terrorist organization designated by the US.

Soleimani is one of the most powerful men in the Middle East and the second powerful in Iran. America had put Soleimani on a par with Osama bin Laden and had been keeping close tabs on him.

He began his military career during the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, during which Soleimani commanded the 41st Division.
