WASHINGTON: Early results from the US presidential election have shown that Donald Trump leading over Joe Biden in the potentially pivotal race of Florida, BBC reported.

With over 90% of votes counted in Florida, Republican incumbent Trump was three points ahead of Biden – his Democratic challenger.

It is, however, too early to project who won in other key states, including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Ohio and North Carolina.

Over 100 million people had already cast their ballots in early voting, reports said.

Results so far

As polling stations closed across the US East Coast, Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Ohio, it looked as though the two could go either race towards the White House.

Both Pennsylvania and Florida are considered must-wins for Trump.

However, it is too early to project four other crucial battlegrounds such as Michigan, Arizona, Texas and Wisconsin.

It has been projected that Trump will hold on to North Dakota, South Dakota, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arkansas and West Virginia.

Meanwhile, BBC projects Biden will keep his home state of Delaware as well as Colorado, New York, Maryland, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Washington DC in his column.

Likewise, it has been projected that New Mexico, Maine, Minnesota, Illinois, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire are trending towards Biden.

National opinion polls have given a firm lead to Biden.

Trump is expected to address the nation later today.
