Nepal supports China’s national security bill for Hong Kong

KATHMANDU: Nepal has supported new national security legislation for Hong Kong approved by China’s National People’s Congress.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bharat Raj Paudyal, has made it clear that Nepal reiterates its one-China policy and considers Hong Kong as an integral part of China.

Maintenance of peace, law and order is a primary responsibility of a nation, Spokesperson Paudyal said it in response to media queries on National Security Law for Hong Kong.

He stressed Nepal believes in non-interference in the internal affairs of any country and supports China’s efforts to maintain law and order in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China that is ruled under a “one country, two systems” principle, which allows the city some freedoms that those on the mainland do not have.

That includes self-governing power, limited election rights, and a largely separate legal and economic framework from mainland China.

Details of the law are still scarce — but it will target secession, subversion of state power, terrorism activities and foreign interference, the Chinese government has said. The process to enact the law bypasses Hong Kong’s legislature and could take a few months to complete.
