Act of barring entry of Nepalis is against int’l law: Prof. Dr. Subedi

Prof. Dr. Surya Subedi.

LONDON: A Nepali expert on internal law has said that Nepal should allow entry of its citizens stranded at different border points with India.

Prof. Dr. Surya Subedi, a professor of international law at the University of Leeds, remarked that stopping citizens at the entry points is against Nepal’s constitution and also against international laws.

“The act is against fundamental rights guaranteed by Nepal’s constitution and also against different international treaties Nepal has ratified,” he said, “Nepal should immediately allow its citizens to enter.”

He stressed that Nepal and India should form a mechanism to address the issue.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch has said that the Nepali government should act immediately so that its citizens can come home.

It should also work with other governments to ensure the protection of its citizens abroad, it stated.

Hundreds of Nepalis have been left marooned at different entry points with India after Nepal closed border following a lockdown.
