Australian company ‘eager’ to construct 500 MW hydro project in Nepal



KATHMANDU: An Australian company has shown interest in constructing a hydropower project with a generation capacity of more than 500 MW in Nepal.

The Fortescue Metal Group Limited has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation to generate and consume at least 500 MW of electricity in Nepal.

A virtual meeting has been already held between the Ministry of Energy and the representatives of the company.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Barshaman Pun ‘Ananta’ in a farewell meeting with Australian Ambassador to Nepal Peter Budd at the Ministry on Friday, Minister Pun said that the government has responded positively to the proposal.

Welcoming the Australian company’s attempt to bring large investment in Nepal, Minister Pun clarified that the Government of Nepal would facilitate it.
