River erosion, inundation constant problems in Kailali

KAILALI: River erosion and inundation are the constant problems in Kailali, the district in Sudurpashim State. The issue is getting amplified each year, but no effective preventive measures in place.

A large scale of arable land along the downstream region is being converted into desert every year due to erosion.
Monsoon floods from the rivers and stream originated from the Chure region are the reason for constant inundation in the district.

Karnali, Khutiya, Gauriganga, Shibganga, and Guraha rivers turn violent during monsoon, causing erosion at a higher scale. Similarly, the Mohana River that flows along the Nepal-India border is also the cause of erosion in the district.

The study of Water Resources and Irrigation Development Division Office shows that these sources of water have caused and fueled the erosion and inundation issues in this Terai plain.

Division Chief Dambar Dhital said effective efforts to control the detrimental effects triggered by rivers could not take place due to budget constraint.

He went on to say that last fiscal year, a tender was called for the Kandra river-control works, but there was no further progress ahead due to the COVID-19 crisis.

The People’s Embankment Office, Kanchanpur owns the responsibilities of constructing embankments along the Mahakali and Doda Rivers in Kanchanpur and Khutiya and Mohana Rivers in Kailali.

It is said river-control works are likely to take place in Mohana and Khutiya in the current fiscal year.
