COVID-19 patient treated through plasma therapy first time in Nepal

KATHMANDU: First time in Nepal, a COVID-19 infected person has been treated with plasma therapy at the Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH).

A 60-year-old male from Biratnagar was treated with plasma therapy, Dr. Santa Kumar Das said.

He added that the patient’s condition is improving after the treatment.

The infected man was admitted to the hospital on July 25 with pneumonia.

He was earlier treated in the ICU, and was later put on ventilator. Last Thursday, there was a significant improvement in the patient’s health after the plasma of a recovered person was given to him.

“Now his pneumonia has improved by 70 percent. Earlier, 60 percent oxygen was required for him. Now only 28 percent is needed,” he added.

According to Dr Das the patient does not require to be put on ventilator after the plasma therapy treatment.

Plasma therapy is considered to be effective in the treatment of serious infections of the coronavirus.

It has been used by other countries as well. The blood of the infected person who is cured by this method is given to the seriously ill person.

The Nepal Health Research Council is conducting research on the treatment of plasma therapy.

The council has also urged the infected to donate plasma as per their wish.

A youth who gives plasma to the coronavirus infected persons was being treated in the TUTH. His identity has not been revealed.
