Global COVID-19 deaths surpass 688,000-mark



KATHMANDU: Global COVID-19 deaths have surpassed 688,000-mark reaching 688,591 as of Sunday morning, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

More than 18 million people have been infected with the coronavirus pandemic throughout the globe.

A total of 246,566 new cases were reported throughout the globe in a single day as of this morning. With this, total cases have reached 18,008,849 worldwide. Out of them, 11.3 million (over 60 percent) have recovered so far while others are undergoing treatment.

The number of deaths worldwide in the last 24 hours is 5,386 that took the number of deaths to 688,591.

The United States reported the most COVID-19 cases and deaths, standing at 4,579,761 and 153,642, respectively.

Other countries with over 30,000 fatalities include Brazil, Mexico, Britain, India, Italy and France.

Coronavirus has killed 203,598 people in European countries. European countries had witnessed 2.8 million cases and 1.74 million have recovered so far.

A total of 221,312 people have died in North American countries. The number of infections has reached 5.59 million. Of them, 2.89 million have been declared infection-free.

Similarly, 98,077 people have died in Asian countries. Out of 4.37 million people infected, 3.23 million have recovered and at least 145,345 people have died in South American countries. Of the 4.18 million infected, 2.83 million have recovered.

In African countries, 20,018 people have died as 948,687 have been infected. Out of the infected, 606,320 have won their fight against coronavirus.

At least 226 people have been killed in Oceania and Australia. Of the 19,061 people infected, 11,856 have recovered.
