Nomination of envoys sparks dispute within NCP; Prachanda ‘displeased’

KATHMANDU: The government’s decision to nominate ambassadors to the United States of America and United Kingdom has sparked disputes within the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP).

Party insiders said NCP Executive Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” is “displeased” with what has been dubbed “unilateral” decision made by the cabinet Thursday morning.

“Comrade Chairman (Prachanda) is displeased with the way the government nominated the names for the ambassadors without consulting him or the party,” the source told Khabarhub.

It should be noted that the cabinet decided to nominate former Finance Minister Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada as ambassador to the United States and former Chief Secretary Lok Darshan Regmi ambassador to the United Kingdom.

“The cabinet decision is against the spirits of the agreement reached between Prime Minister KP Oli and Chairman Prachanda,” the source said.

The two top leaders had earlier this month agreed to move ahead on the basis of consensus on both the government and party issues.

Even party senior leader Jhalanath Khanal is learned to have been disappointed with the cabinet decision.

The latest development comes at a time when several rounds of latest consultations between PM Oli and Prachanda failed to agree on the issue of cabinet reshuffle.
