Shanker Das Bairagi appointed Chief Secretary



KATHMANDU: The government has promoted Shanker Das Bairagi to the post of Chief Secretary on Thursday.

A cabinet meeting held on this morning appointed Foreign Secretary Bairagi to the post of Chief Secretary, informed Minister for Agriculture Ghanashyam Bhusal.

The post of the Chief Secretary was vacant after the outgoing Chief Secretary Lok Dharshan Regmi resigned from his post today even though he was officially retiring on October 19.

According to Minister Bhusal, Regmi has been recommended as the Nepali Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Who is Bairagi?

Born in Parbat in 1966, Bairagi is considered an expert on foreign affairs. He was the secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Bairagi, who joined Nepali Foreign Service in December 1987, had assumed the responsibility of Foreign Secretary on 11 October 2015.

Over three decades of his career in Foreign Service, he held a variety of positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepali missions abroad.

He also served as Acting Foreign Secretary from February 2014 to  October 10, 2015.

Bairagi also served as the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Office, World Trade Organization and other International Organizations in Geneva as well as international organizations based in Vienna and Rome from February 2012 to November 2013.

During the same period, he was also the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Nepal to the Swiss Confederation with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Italy.

Bairagi previously worked as Second/First Secretary, Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi from August 1995 – May 1998.

Likewise, he also worked as Counsellor/Minister-Counsellor/Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Nepal to the Benelux Countries and the Mission of Nepal to the European Union from April 2000 – June 2004.

Bairagi is a graduate of Law from Nepal Law Campus and holds Master’s Degree in Political Science from Tribhuvan University.

He has also obtained a Master’s Degree in European Integration and Development (Euromaster) from Free University of Brussels in 2002.
