Detainee commits suicide at Jawalakhel police custody



KATHMANDU: A detainee doing time at the custody of Metropolitan Police Range, Jawalakhel committed suicide while Inspector General of Police (IGP) Thakur Prasad Gyawali was delivering a speech at a program to inagurate a newly constructed building in the vicinity on Wednesday morning.

Chief guests of the program were Inspector General of Police Thakur Prasad Gyawali, Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan Chiribabu Maharjan and others.

Three AIGs, DIGs and other senior police officials were also present at the program.

While inaugurating the four-storey building, Inspector General of Police Gyawali made a statement while a person committed suicide in the police custody cell inside.

Durgesh Yadav, 24, who was arrested from Gwarko on July 28 in connection with the rape case, has committed suicide, according to police.

He was arrested after raping a physically challenged woman in a maize field.

He committed suicide by tearing a bed sheet in the detention cell and hanging himself from a window, police said.

“He was kept alone in a separate room,” informed Jawalakhel Police. “His PCR report is yet to come.”
