Power demand surges to all-time high with bone-chilling cold

KATHMANDU: With the bone-chilling cold gripping the country, demand for electricity has surged significantly.

The sudden surge in the demand has caused the overloading in the distribution system.

It has resulted in irregular power supply, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

Kathmandu on Saturday had recorded a minimum temperature of 0.6 degree Celsius.

The demand for electricity has surged after household customers have started using electric heater and air conditioners among other electrical equipment to beat the cold.

According to the power authority, the electricity demand for the whole country stood at 1,338 Megawatts on Friday. It is the highest demand so far recorded this year.

The demand for electricity has increased by around 25 percent and 40 percent of the increased demand is in Kathmandu Valley alone.

It has caused low voltage, snapping of wires and explosion of transformers, according to NEA.
