Former Maldieves President to be a new speaker

MALE: The former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed is all set to become the country’s parliamentary speaker. Nasheed was chosen to head the people’s Majlis, or the Parliament.

His Maldivian Democratic Party won a near three quarter majority in the 87-member assembly in April. Nasheed has promised to usher Maldives in a new era of stability and democracy.

Nasheed served as the fourth President of the Maldives  from 2008 to 2012 as the first democratically elected president. (Agencies)
