127 schools in Jajarkot running without teachers

JAJARKOT: One hundred and twenty-seven out of 433 schools in Jajarkot district are running without a quota for teacher posts.

There is provision for subject teacher quotas for lower secondary level (grade 6-8) and secondary level (grade 9-10) at government community schools. It is stated in the acts and regulations related to education that there should be at least four quotas for subject teachers in community schools.

But many schools in the district are found operating without the subject teacher quota as the district authorities granted permission despite the unavailability of such quotas.

Twenty-six secondary schools, 46 lower secondary schools and 55 primary schools in the district are running without the teaching quotas, according to the Education Development and Coordination Unit Jajarkot.

These schools are compelled to hire teachers and pay their salary from the community sources to die to the lack of government teacher quotas, it is learned. This means that the teachers appointed on this basis are drawing less salary compared to their counterparts who have been appointed on the assigned quotas.

To meet the salary of these teachers, the schools are collecting fees from students and sometimes the shortfall of money to pay teachers is met through the amount allocated for community development, Coordination Unit chief Tilak Bhattarai said.
