JALESHWOR: The Jaleshwor Jail in Mahottahari district has been inundated following the torrential rains Friday morning. The rain that started from 5:00 am continued for around one and half hour, leaving the prison area waterlogged. The jail serves as the integrated confinement centre (for few years) for Mohattari, Dhanusha and Sarlahi districts.
Around 160-year-old jail infrastructure dating back to the Rana regime is based in the lowest point of Jaleshwor municipality-2. According to jailor Pradeep Kumar Saha, inundation during rains has been the frequent problem for the jail. Waters covered an area from the main entrance to the jail to the detention centre, said guard Shyam Sundar Yadav.
According to him, inmates are facing problem cooking their food, eating, living, sleeping, going to toilet and even moving around due to the runoff from rain and the water that has entered from drain. There are altogether 463 people, including 419 male, 41 female and three dependent children in the prison. Likewise, the Armed Police Force (APF) and Nepal Police barracks where the security personnel stay, have been affected by water logging.
The water from the city drain also enters the prison whenever it rains. The prison authorities have urged the Jaleshwar municipality in writing and orally time and again to naddress this problem but in vain, officiating jailor Saha said.
