KATHMANDU: The main opposition party, Nepali Congress, has taken exception to the Council of Ministers for holding its meeting by means of video conference, terming it as in contravention of the law and rule.

Speaking in the outset of the meeting of the House of Representatives today, Nepali Congress chief whip Bal Krishna Khand urged the government to withdraw the amended work procedures related to the operation of the business of the Council of Ministers.

“It is a good aspect to use advanced and modern technology, but the latest amendment to the work procedure of the Council of Ministers has resulted in power abuse,” he said, adding that it was not right to conduct the meeting of the Cabinet under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister when the PM is not in the country.

Chief Whip Khand added that holding the meeting of the Council of Ministers through video-conferencing will not only increase the possibility of leaking of information but it also would be against the oath one has taken while assuming office.

Stating that the parliament has already been informed of the allocation of the portfolio of the Prime Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister as per the practice of assigning the portfolio whenever the PM went abroad, he questioned the rationale of this practice when the meeting is held through video conference under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.

Chief Whip Khand on the occasion, on behalf of the main opposition party, extended best wishes for the health of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli who is currently in Singapore in course of medical treatment.
