Death toll in Albania quake rises to 13

TIRANA: Thirteen people have died in Tuesday’s powerful earthquake in Albania, the defense ministry said in its latest update.

“The death toll is 13,” a statement said, without elaborating. The 6.4 magnitude quake is the strongest to strike the Balkan state in decades.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 6.4 quake was centered 30 kilometers (19 miles) northwest of the capital, Tirana.

The quake was felt along the Albanian coast. Authorities reported scores of aftershocks and called on the people in the most affected areas to stay out of their homes.
