Minister Pun requests Qatar for cooperation in rural electrification

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Barshaman Pun on Tuesday met a visiting delegation of ‘Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD)’ at his ministry in Singha Durbar.

During the meeting, discussions were held on the possibility of investment in Nepal’s energy, solar and hydropower sectors and areas of cooperation between the countries.

On the occasion, Advisor to the Minister – International Development at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Samer R. Frangieh said that his country was eager to assist Nepal’s to achieve its development goals.

Saying that Qatar was eager to cooperate with Nepal in the areas of energy, tourism and agriculture, Frangieh expressed his concerns over areas for investment.

Minister Pun said that the recent Qatar visit by President Bidya Devi Bhandari was successful in fostering mutual relations between the countries.

Appraising the delegation that a cent percent foreign investment in energy was possible as Nepal has adopted a liberal policy for investment in energy, Minister Pun requested for investment in the sector.

Minister Pun said that the government has prioritized rural electrification and proposed Qatar for cooperation to achieve the government’s goal to provide electricity access to all populations within the three years.
