Coming back to Nepal during Dashain? Get these goods duty-free

KATHMANDU: With the Dashain festival just around the corner, the government has announced duty-free for some certain items of goods being imported into the country.

The Department of Immigration has said that if the returnee is well informed of which items of goods are duty-free and which are not before coming back home, they will not face many hassles.

A lot of Nepali migrant workers are unaware of which goods are duty-free and which are not. Many Nepali migrant workers are facing problems due to their ignorance of the customs rules.

Which goods are duty-free?

Most of the returnees are found to be bringing TV, mobile, phone, gold, silver and whiskey. The government will seize those goods if they are not legal or impose heavy tax on them.

The government allows importing one liter of whiskey duty-free.

The government allows a migrant worker to bring a single piece of a computer, tablet, watch, camera, video camera, cellular and pen-drive duty-free.

If a migrant worker is returning home after one year, they are allowed to bring a 32-inch television set. However, this does not apply to those who are returning without completing one year.

Migrant workers are free to bring two mobile sets without tax. Likewise, people involved in various professions are allowed to bring with them profession-related materials.

For instance, doctors can bring a stethoscope, players can bring sports material and musicians are allowed to bring a musical instrument. A single item is duty-free.

The tax is free for clothes, beds, and other personal materials or for home use if imported on a small scale. In the case of a large scale, the tax will be imposed according to the existing rule. Medicine for personal use and those materials for physically handicapped people are duty-free.

A set of music or video player, refrigerator, washing machine, fan, radio, cassette player are duty-free.

Foodstuffs up to seven kilograms are duty-free. Similarly, 15 items of goods including clothing, shoes, and cosmetics can be imported by paying 40 percent of tax in line with the provision of Jhiti-Gunta.

Likewise, 40 percent of tax will be imposed on the import of up to 200 sticks of cigarettes and 50 sticks of cigars.

Provisions on gold and silver

No tax will be imposed up to 50 grams of gold. Rs 5,200 will be charged every 10 grams between 50 grams to 100 grams. Similarly, Rs 6, 200 will be charged every 10 grams between 100 grams to 150 grams and Rs 7,200 will be charged every 10 grams ranging between 150 grams to 200 grams. Likewise, Rs 9,200 will be charged every 10 grams between 200 grams to 250 grams.  In the case of silver, up to 100 grams will be duty-free.
