BIHAR: More than 5,000 children, mostly 6 to 14 years, have abandoned education in the mica mining districts of India’s Bihar and Jharkhand, media reports have said.
They have started working, as reports suggest, as laborers to supplement their family income.
A survey conducted by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) following a report by Terre Des Hommes, which is an international development agency currently working in India, had earlier said over 22,000 children have been working as child laborers in Bihar and Jharkhand mica mining areas.
According to the report, the children did not want to attend schools due to lack of interest, lack of aspiration, and above all, to supplement their family income, among others. (Agencies)
