Nominees announced for sports award

KATHMANDU: The Selection Committee of Nepal Sports Journalists Forum unveiled the nominees of the male, female, youth and coach of the year categories at a press conference here on Tuesday.

Five cricketers, three footballers, two each player of volleyball, paragliding, athletics and judo were nominated while one each from badminton, karate, golf and taekwondo category were nominated for this annual award.

Nominated in the women’s category were Sabitri Bhandari from football, Saraswati Chaudhary from volleyball, Sita Rana Magar from cricket, Manita Shrestha from judo and Nima Gurung from taekwondo.

Similarly, Paras Khadka and Sompal Kami from cricket, Yukesh Gurung from paragliding, Sukraraj Rai of golf and Indra Bahadur Shrestha of judo have been nominated in the male category.

Under the youth player category, Prince Dahal of badminton, Ajit Kumar Yadav of athletics, Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi, Manjali Yonjan of football and Bijaya Shrestha from karate were nominated.

Likewise, Jagat Tamata from cricket, Yogesh Bhattarai of paragliding, Dhaniram Chaudhary of athletics, Gyanendra Bista of volleyball and Hari Khadka from football have been nominated under the Coach category.

Forum, however, had already made public the nominees of People’s Choice Award under which cricketer Sandip Lamichhane, Prince Dahal of Badminton, Reshma Bhandari of football and Maheshwor Maharjan of bodybuilding have been nominated.

The recipients of Para Athlete, Special Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Team of the Year, International Asian Journalist Award will be announced on May 17, the day when the Award ceremony will take place.

The Player of the Year from a male and female category, each recipient of the People’s Choice and recipient of coach awards will receive one Bajaj Pulsar bike each while other winners will get Rs 500,000 cash price, according to the organizers.

The event will take place in Academy Hall at Kamaladi in Kathmandu.
