KMC prepares design for public toilets

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City, which had been planning for public toilets, has just prepared design for it. The construction of public toilets will begin from the current fiscal year, it informed.

Vice-Chairman at urban planning commission in KMC, Saroj Basnet, said 20 designs were prepared for the public lavatory.

The construction will begin in the most needed area and on the basis of budget, he said, adding, “The design ranges the facility ranging from single to three-person use at a time. Along with the toilets, there will be bathrooms as well. Everyone will have access to these.”

According to him, the construction cost of such toilets ranges from Rs 1.5 million to Rs 10 million. One the problem of public toilet is addressed, it would be a huge relief to the city commuters, he believed. Even the existing toilets would be upgraded.

The management of waste with the construction of the new toilets is equally important. There are altogether 115 public toilets in the Kathmandu Valley, among which, KMC has 58. Among 58, only 28 are usable.

KMC said lack of water and sanitation made some toilets unusable. More pressing is, most toilets are not women and disabled people friendly, it is said.
