LISBON: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday stressed on avoiding ‘any form of escalation’ in the Gulf, media reports have said.

His remarks come amid an escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran following the shooting down of an unmanned U.S. drone by Iran this week.

He said the world cannot afford confrontation in the Gulf on the sidelines of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon.

It also should be noted that U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to impose new sanctions on Iran. (Agencies)
