Myanmar’s Supreme Court rejects appeal by jailed journalists

NAYPYITAW: Myanmar’s top court has rejected the appeal of two Reuters journalists sentenced to seven years in jail for breaking the Official Secrets Act, local media reports said.

Without elaborating, Supreme Court Justice Soe Naing told the court in Naypyitaw that they were sentenced for seven years and this decision stands. He said the appeal was rejected.

Journalists Wa Lone, 33, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 29, have spent over 16 months in detention since they were arrested in December 2017. They were held while working on an investigation into the killing of 10 Rohingya Muslim men and boys.

The journalists’ lawyers had appealed to the Supreme Court citing lack of proof of a crime and evidence that they were set up by police.

According to a policeman, some police officers had planted secret documents on the journalists. (Agencies)
