India-bound children rescued from Nepalgunj

NEPALGUNJ: A total of 20 unattended children on the way to Gorakhpur district in India were stopped at Nepal-India border point in Nepalgunj, Banke recently.

The children were traveling under mysterious circumstances, police have said.

Siddaraj Paneru, Chief of CWIN, Child Protection and Helpline Nepalgunj, said that the stranded children have been rescued and handed over to their respective parents in the presence of the district administration.

He said that the unsafe travel that the Nepali children were making to India could have pushed them to tricky and risky situations.

Police in Nepalgunj has stepped up its vigilance in the border points with the joint efforts of NGO/INGOs working in the children’s sector to cut cross-border trafficking.

The rescued children brought to CWIN Child Protection and Helpline’s Office said they were heading toward India to seek job opportunities as they wanted to make some money during their school holidays.

Madhav Rijal at Area Police Office, Jamunaha said that the children crossing the border in droves were stopped at the border points as they were not accompanied by an adult.

Rijal said that one among the children lied that he had taken ill.

Children, mainly from mountainous areas and economically-disadvantaged groups, are found to be sneaking their way into Indian bordering towns for employments during their vacation.
