KATHMANDU: The main opposition Nepali Congress has suggested that the decision of the Constitutional Council should be made on the basis of consensus.
A meeting of the party office-bearers held in party President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Budhanilkantha-based residence reached to a conclusion that a majority process-based decisions would not address the spirit of the constitution.
The meeting was univocal that appointments to be made in the Constitutional Commission should not be viewed from the partisan lens, advising the President to take a stand towards that end, according to one of the meeting participants.
They were of the view that it would be appropriate to hold a formal meeting of the Council only after informal discussions on the related topic.
During the meeting, party President Deuba said he raised the issue during his discussions with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepal Communist Party (NCP) chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal about appointments at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and other constitutional bodies.
Similarly, the meeting also discussed the issue of picking up party candidates for the by-election on November 23. The party has summoned a Central Committee meeting on October 24 to fix the issue and for other preparations.
The party office bearers are meeting against tomorrow to forge an agreement for agenda to be presented in the Central Committee meeting.
