Dengue: Symptoms and prevention

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease which has recently spread in various parts of Nepal. The virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes basically of the species Aedes aegypti.

Symptoms

It usually begins five to six days after infection. It may last for up to 10 days.

High fever

Severe headache

Severe joint and muscle pain

Pain behind the eyes

Fatigue

Nausea

Vomiting

At times, the symptoms are mild and can be misunderstood as flu or other viral infection. People with enfeebled immune system are believed to be at greater risk for developing dengue fever.

Diagnosis and treatment

Dengue fever can be diagnosed with a blood test. However, there are no particular antibiotics or medicines to cure the fever as it is caused by a virus. Rest and drinking plenty of fluids is advised. There is no vaccine for dengue currently.

Effective home remedies

Giloy: It is an important herb in Ayurveda that helps in strengthening the immune system. It also maintains the metabolic rate and protects your body against infections.

Papaya Leaves: The papaya leaves increases the platelet count while reducing the symptoms of fever. Crushing the papaya leaves and consuming it will help in flushing out toxins.

Fenugreek Leaves: These leaves will also help reduce fever. It helps to ease pain and promote restful sleep. Soaking fenugreek leaves in water and drinking it will help.

Turmeric: This will boost metabolism as well as accelerate the healing process. Consuming turmeric along with milk can be a great idea.

How to prevent dengue:

Dengue doesn’t spread from a person to another. The best way to prevent is to keep one’s surroundings clean or by wearing protective clothing. Dengue mosquitos basically attack during the day and that too below the elbow or knee.

These mosquitos are generally active between the months of August to October.
