TV service providers warn of service shutdown



KATHMANDU: Nepali television service providers and distributors have said that the clean feed policy formulated by the government can’t be implemented.

The Advertisement (Regulation) Bill which has already been endorsed by the National Assembly bars foreign television channels from airing advertisements from the date a notice is published in Nepal Gazette.

Television service providers and distributors have been protesting the rule saying that it can’t be enforced.

Chairman of Cable Television Association Sudhir Parajuli says implementing the clean feed policy is not possible as Nepal lacks own satellite.

“We don’t have own satellite to implement the policy. Indian broadcasters transmit channels with advertisements,” he said,” They have made it clear that they can’t provide a clean feed to Nepal as it not commercially viable for them.”

Likewise, Chairman of Internet Service Providers’ Association of Nepal (ISPAN) Bhojraj Bhatta said that Nepali DTH and cable companies will bite the dust if the policy is implemented.

Managing Director of Dish Media Network Sudeep Acharya said that they will close their businesses and submit the keys to the government it the policy is implemented forcefully.

Television service providers and distributors have already announced to close foreign channels for 24 hours in protest of the policy.

On the other, the government is adamant on implementing the policy.
