Rocket fired near US Embassy in Iraq

BAGHDAD: A rocket has been fired into the Iraqi capital Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, near the U.S. Embassy, the Iraqi military said.

The rocket, however, caused no casualties, media reports said.

The rocket attack comes two weeks after U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Iraqi leaders that the United States would respond with force if they failed to keep in check Iran-backed militias.

Reports said Iran-backed militias are expanding their power in Iraq in recent times.

There had been no claim of responsibility so far, according to officials.

According to Iraq military, the rocket fell in the middle of the Green Zone, near the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. (Agencies)
