MOSCOW: Citing the US Democrats continuous criticism against President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the impeachment against Trump was ‘fabricated’ with the purpose of reversing 2016 election result.

Addressing the journalists and reporters attending his annual year-end news conference, he expressed his hope that Trump would remain in the post surviving the allegations against him.

Putin, like most analysts expected the Senate to exonerate Trump though the Democrat-led House of Representatives impeached him on Wednesday.

Regarding the case as a continuation of the (U.S.) intra-political battle where the Democrats who lost were trying to achieve results using other methods and means, Putin said “They first accused Trump of a conspiracy with Russia.”

“Then it turned out there wasn’t a conspiracy and that it couldn’t be the basis for impeachment. Now they have dreamt up (the idea) of some kind of pressure being exerted on Ukraine,” he added.

Despite his soft tone on impeachment issue, Putin still criticized the US for its ‘unfriendly steps’ towards Russia.
